From 1975 to 1990, Mohan Babu redefined the antagonist’s role in Indian cinema, becoming one of the most sought-after villains in the country. His powerful performances earned both fear and admiration from audiences. Films like Swargam Narakam marked the beginning of his rise to prominence, with his ability to captivate viewers and elevate the villain role to an art form.

A Leading Actor’s Era

In the 1990s, Mohan Babu successfully transitioned to leading roles, delivering blockbuster hits like Alludugaru, Assembly Rowdy, and Pedarayudu. These films established him as a box-office powerhouse and a versatile performer capable of handling a wide range of characters. Many of his Telugu movies were later remade in Hindi and Tamil, where they became massive blockbusters, further expanding his legacy across Indian cinema.

The success of Pedarayudu was celebrated with an iconic 200-day function in Tirupati. This historic event saw the attendance of the entire state political cabinet and the Chief Minister, an unprecedented occurrence in Indian cinema. The event drew nearly 10 lakh people, a testament to Mohan Babu’s immense popularity and cultural impact.

Mohan Babu’s influence transcended cinema and extended into the political sphere. His 1993 production Major Chandrakanth, starring N.T. Rama Rao, played a pivotal role in rallying support for NTR’s return as Chief Minister. The film’s 100-day celebration in Tirupati was attended by an unprecedented number of fans and stands as a significant moment in both cinematic and political history.

A Visionary in Education

Beyond cinema, Mohan Babu’s contributions to education are equally noteworthy. In 1992, he established the SREE Vidyaniketan Educational Trust, offering quality and affordable education to thousands of students. For over three decades, the trust has provided 25% free education, empowering underprivileged students. The establishment of Mohan Babu University in 2022 reflects his unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for future generations.

To mark this historic milestone, Vishnu Manchu, son of Mohan Babu, has planned monthly events starting December 2024, leading up to a grand celebration in November 2025. Each event will be announced on the 1st of every month, building excitement and anticipation for this yearlong tribute.
